Why hasn’t Superman had a great game yet? Simple question right? We’ve seen a slew of great super hero games in the last decade, some of which hit it right on the money (Arkham Asylum), some of which were brutally real to the character(X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and some just gave us the freedom we had been asking for (Spider-man 2). With Arkham City looking to be a spectacular follow up, one has to wonder why the Man Of Steel hasn’t been done justice to gaming yet? Here my hypothesis on how to make a good Superman game:
1. Give Us All His Powers From The Beginning
No finding powers. That’s so 90’s.
We don’t wanna discover his laser eye sight, or his ice breath 1/3 of the way through. We want all his powers right from the beginning of the game. As a gamer who played through many Metroid adventures, it gets old finding powers that we should already have. You should be able to upgrade your powers throughout the adventure. Similar to Crackdown, the more you use your wind breath, the more powerful it should become. Then maybe more combos can open up, such as blowing an enemy into the air and blasting them with your eyes. With all his abilities, you should be able to get real creative, which leads us too…..
2. Make The Combat Exciting
Let’s not have the gamer just mashing square the whole game. I know Superman isn’t a great fighter like Batman, but let’s get creative with the fighting. A great example of that is the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, in which he had a number of ways to dispatch his opponents, whether it be through environments or multi-character combos. Action games like Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, and God Of War make every battle feel epic and important. Let’s treat this as such.
3. Open World Freedom
Let us fly where we want, when we want, how we want.
One of Superman’s key abilities is flight. So let’s finally give him the freedom soar. For this to happen, the in game world would probably have to be at least 3x the size of GTA: San Andreas. Then give him the ability to fly throughout this tremendous terrain. His flight should improve through the game as well. He should start out moderately fast, but by the end, he should be able to fly the entire map in no time. Spider-man 2 was beloved by many gamers simply because of his ability to web swing around a fictional NYC. We want that freedom of just being free.
4. Give Us Some Good Enemies
Exciting is the name of the game
Superman is hard to damage. Bullets shouldn’t hurt him. PERIOD. But he can be hurt. Now if he has enemies with super powered mech suits or Kryptonite fired lasers, then I’d understand. Maybe some enemies from Apocalypse to give him some trouble, but regular enemies with an regular AK-47 should not even phase him. Be creative.
5. Give Us Some Good Bosses
No fighting %^&#ing tornadoes please!!!
Superman’s rogue gallery isn’t as robust as The Dark Knight’s, but he still has a couple of baddies to give him some trouble. Braniac is one of the smartest beings in the universe, and probably the main reason why Krypton was destroyed. General Zod has all of Supes powers plus the he’s a military strategist and an all around better fighter. We all know Lex Luthor will always be his main nemesis, but I’d rather have him in an background roll. Darkseid has gone pound for pound with him before, and has even won a number of times. Of course only one foe has put him down for the count, Doomsday. An epic battle through a war torn Metropolis would be something to remember.
What I’m asking for is not a lot, because all this has been done before. It would just have to be on a much larger scale because Superman’s powers are damn near limitless. The Last Son Of Krpton deserves a game we should all be proud of. What are some of your ideas for making a great Superman game.
